the majority of fanfic is unreadable. how the hell do people get like obsessed with fanfic and spend hours and hours reading this crap. like i can count on one hand the fics ive actually liked, yet i scroll past pages upon pages of utter drivel with tens of thousands of views, the whole time just baffled anyone could possibly derive enjoyment from it. whatever isnt porn is unfathomably bad or has nothing at all to do with the source material beyond borrowing licensed characters for non-canon formulaic plug & play storytelling. fanfic is the picrew of so-called literature, just frankensteining together tropes and character archetypes into a mad libs-like slurry of regurgitated content. perhaps the main issue with people who create fanfic is that they only have the consumption of mass-marketed media and the vacuum of fanfic to refer to rather than nonfiction or academia or independent creative works so they end up with an echo chamber that becomes self-referential almost to the point of parody, and anyone outside the cave can only pity their worship of shadows

i wrote this because im tired of my favorite character being depicted in fan content as a rapist and/or pedophile despite there being nothing in the source material about his sexual proclivities at all. he’s the quintessential powerhungry villain and all the fucking geniuses on fan sites can come up with 99% of the time is to “reimagine” this dark-skinned, musclebound, tattooed villain of a rated T video game as a rapist. this isnt about “minors writing for minors” (though if minors are writing this shit thats a separate problem) this is about how fanfic is so dependent on consuming the same tired tropes over and over that they perpetuate extremely lazy and harmful stereotypes at the expense of the original material and further audiences looking for faithful characterization.

this editorial on “roving dudeslash fandom” has been linked on tumblr in the past and it’s a great breakdown of how alienating “fandom” can be for people who are actual fans of something versus the people focused only on whittling down characters until they fit the mold to play out stock storylines and archetypes (”beige blank slates”). not to mention most of this “dudeslash” is written by women for women’s consumption rather than for gay men, leading to an even more insulated and exclusionary space under the delusion that it is somehow diverse or fulfilling sorely needed representation. people love to bark “dont like dont read” because then it puts the onus on the reader to curate their exposure to oppressive content rather than for the author(s) to interrogate themselves as to what they are writing, what it contributes to and for whom, and why they prioritize the inclusion and safety of certain people in fandom over others.

this post is not about “teens are writing fanfic they have to start somewhere”

this post is not about “it’s just a hobby you cant expect it to be perfectly polished”

this post is about grown ass adults becoming so obsessed with formulaic tropes that they fully disregard canon at the expense of the source material and in turn end up perpetuating negative/harmful stereotypes. i haven’t watched the spiderverse sequel yet but i see what you guys are doing to these characters under the guise of “fanon” just because they’re characters of color. being a fan of “progressive” media doesn’t matter when the fan response is to uncritically hack away everything that makes it unique in order to jam it into the same cookie cutter bullshit they always do.

also i am saying this as a 30-something white woman who writes fanfiction. there are plenty of other 30-something white women in fandom and plenty of them are writing this shit. i dont care if it’s “see spot run” or the most eloquent prose in the universe do not give the bullshit gamergate excuse of “lol it’s not art it’s just a cringe hobby” to alienate media’s target audience from their own fandom. you guys sound like bronies

Ronny D posting MPREG fics on main.

look, not to be a downer, but… why are we making omegaverse jokes about this.

this article is about how Ron DeSantis is leveraging people’s hatred for trans men to fundraise for his presidential campaign:

DeSantis has leaned heavily into the culture war issues — which have become central to his campaign — such as the repeated emails mocking the idea of men getting pregnant. Some transgender men do become pregnant. DeSantis also sent more emails mentioning “woke” than any other candidate.

I know people love “haha omegaverse” jokes but. I REALLY need people to realize that its a microagression against trans men. Pregnant men can face extreme amounts of transphobia, and are in a highly vulnerable situation, and they are being used as a symbol of wokeness by Florida’s fascist wannabe. And it makes me upset to see other trans people seeming to not take this seriously.

Like. ask yourselves why “pregnant men” immediately conjures jokes and absurdity to you, instead of real people that exist and who Ron DeSantis hates? When you see “pregnant man” and your first thoughts are omegaverse porn and “cis men getting pregnant,” you are also mocking the idea of men getting pregnant. And you do so while erasing trans men from the conversation. You make male pregnancy into an absurdist joke about cis men instead of a reality for trans men.

There doesn’t seem to be a single person in the notes of this post who has mentioned trans men. Its just jokes about heat suppressants. People acted shocked and bewildered by the idea of a pregnant man. On “the trans website.” That fucking hurts.

A pregnant trans man was very recently on the cover of a magazine & received a ton of backlash. Pregnant men are accused of child abuse & child molestation for simply being a trans father, and I’ve seen many people specifically say that trans fathers who have been/are on T will “poison” their children. Ignorance about men being pregnant can have real fatal consequences. Transphobia make it a traumatizing process. Pregnant trans men face workplace discrimination. Trans men who are pregnant are in heavy contact with the transphobic medical system which leaves them extremely vulnerable to abuse. This doesn’t even get into trans men and abortion access. There are already people who think pregnant trans men need to have their children taken away. Ron DeSantis is using them specifically to foster hatred and get money. This is serious.

I cannot feel safe around people for whom “pregnant man” is nothing but an absurdist punchline. It hurts to see other trans people erasing transmascs from the discussion, especially when this article is SPECIFICALLY about how DeSantis is emailing people to say “hey, don’t you think pregnant "men” are delusional and a threat to American society? Me too! Give me money so I can terrorize them via the government!“ This is not the first time I’ve seen people do this with pregnant men (immediately jumping to "haha pregnant cis men!! omegaverse!!” jokes without even mentioning trans men at all. Even though we are men that can and do get pregnant. In real life. And are abused for it) but its the first time I’ve seen it done in response to a very clear act of targeted anti-transmasculinity, and this. Hurts.

I don’t know how y'all think you can combat transphobia if you can’t take seriously the issue of male pregnancy. Because transphobes are clearly very interesting in using pregnant men as a weapon, and I would hope y'all would step up for them. We have to acknowledge that the “haha thats so weird and absurd and gross!!!” response to male pregnancy is transphobic and it hurts trans men a lot.

    (Original post).

You know what? Yeah. These are excellent points, and I am sorry and feel genuinely bad about this.

I think being surrounded by transphobia so constantly has sort of caused my brain to need even just a second of relief by mocking the people who have been leading the large scale societal violence against us, but this wasn’t what I should have done. I thought it was direced at my oppressor, but in my clouded judgement I accidentally hurt my brothers.

I shouldn’t have - as a trans woman - stepped out of my lane to make this kind of joke without considering the impact on trans men or trans masc people. It was a cheap joke that engaged in transandrophobia.

I understood DeSantis was talking about trans men, but I went for the 1 second of relief and ended up throwing trans masc people, people I deeply care about as a part of my community, under the bus in my carelessness. I’m sorry.

Also thank you @genderkoolaid I know I’m not directly reblogging you, I’m including both replies because those both illustrate really well what happened.

Thank you ♥️ I really appreciate your apology.

You are Superman, aren’t you? Lois, look, we’ve been through these hallucinations of yours before. Can’t you see what you almost did? Throwing yourself off a building 30 stories high? Can’t you see what a tragic mistake you almost made? I made a mistake? I made a mistake because I risked my life instead of yours. Lois! Don’t be insane! And don’t fall down ‘cause you’re just going to have to get up again!
Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut (2006)

This scene features one of the best things about Chris Reeve’s portrayal, which is that he physicalized his different choices between playing Clark and Superman. Like, look at the difference:

    image
    image

He could go from Rick Moranis to Chris Evans with just his posture. It’s like his glasses are weighing his entire body down. Here it is, in motion:

    image

    Acting.

This is a perfect example that proves that the Clark Kent disguise actually does work….and how it works….

Christopher Reeve was the best Superman and still is

Are we gonna discuss that Lois Lane rationalized that Superman wouldn’t even feel a bullet, thus wouldn’t even know he hadn’t been hit, causing Clark Kent to reveal himself for who he truly is without her having to risk anybodies life?

God I love Christopher Reeve’s Superman because some of Clark’s clumsiness can be seen in Superman too. The fact that this man didn’t realize it was a blank even though he can see things move in slow motion is really funny to me

    image

Like he grew up thinking he had to hide his powers and I just assume that sometimes he forgets he has them because Clark is Clark. He might be superhuman but he’s still a clumsy dumbass and that’s his biggest flaw.

You don’t need kryptonite when you’re dealing with a good honest clumsy man and Lois knows that because she knows Clark!

It’s why I don’t like pretty much any other Superman movie as much. They make him too perfect, that’s not what makes this Kansas man so charming!
